358 Piano Day Part One

Saturday 11.03.23 | 12 – 2pm at St John's Leytonstone, E11 1HH
Piano Day - Jenny Moore, Tori Freestone and Alcyona Mick Duo + Maya-Leigh Rosenwasser
| tickets - dm358.eventbrite.co.uk

Each year our series make space and time to focus our gaze on one of the most powerful and dynamic machines available to a musician – listen anew to the flexible, familiar, occasionally fierce pianoforte.

After having wowed audiences at her debut Daylight appearance, Jenny Moore returns. She is the songwriter and lead mystic of the choral-punk ensemble Jenny Moore’s Mystic Business. Her most recent release, The Piano Tapes Vol.1 came out on Lost Map Records in 2022 and features stripped back, piano-based compositions that map her inner world with her notorious dry wit and powerful melodies. Jenny will play a very rare, almost solo set, with sneak appearances from members of her queer feminist choir, F*Choir.

From almost solo to a very definite duo we introduce to the series Ivor Novello, award winning Tori Freestone on tenor saxophone and Alcyona Mick on piano. Their pallet of influence may take jazz as a starting point but includes Brazilian music, English folk, Latin, Arabic, free playing, Classical, Mon and more. Their debut album ‘Criss Cross’ was released on the transatlantic label Whirlwind Recordings, while the new album ‘Make one room an everywhere’ will be out later this year.

Maya-Leigh Rosenwasser is a performer and composer based in London. They are currently a PhD candidate at Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance, researching how performances can connect with concepts such as playfulness, queerness, intimacy, gender as well as engaging with perceptions of societal and artistic notions of success and failure. Their performance will include a curated journey through composers who connect to those themes.

Join us for a set of performances that expand, challenge and extend our idea of what this three hundred year old instrument can do, whether placed together with other voices and instruments or just alone with two hands and two feet and a page full of notes and ideas.

Further event details: Pay-What-You-Can entry (we suggest £10 adult, children free) in advance or on the door, subject to availability/capacity. An event for all ages. As always with this series we endeavour to make our audience feel as safe, comfortable and welcome as we possibly can.
