26 March @ 12:00 pm - 2:00 pm
Xenia Pestova Bennett & Karlheinz Essl, Sarah Angliss with Melanie Pappenheim and Sarah Gabriel + Jo Johnson & Hilary Robinson
26 March 2022 at St John’s Leytonstone, midday to 2pm | advance tickets
The Goldberg Variations is one of the most recognisable pieces of keyboard repertoire, yet we rarely question the way it’s presented. Austrian composer Karlheinz Essl offers a new version for piano and live electronics with time-stretched harmonies manipulated in real time and played back through spatialised loudspeakers in between the piano variations, bringing together Baroque and contemporary sound worlds.
Within the space of St John’s Leytonstone you’ll be able to hear a rare performance of Gold.Berg.Werk which transcends it’s origins and becomes a new piece in its own right, creating a sense of space and grandeur through electronic distribution of the interludes. This magical performance invites and entices the audience to join us on a journey of discovery, opening and blossoming into a new universe of sound.
Sarah Angliss’ music explores the sonorities of voices and ancient instruments, revealing and augmenting them with her distinctive electronic techniques. She received the Ivor Novello Visionary Award for her strikingly original music for film, theatre and the live music stage. Sarah will joined by vocalists Sarah Gabriel and Melanie Pappenheim, both of whom appeared on her soundtrack for Amulet, the eerie feature film debut from director Romola Garai.
Jo Johnson & Hilary Robinson make collaborative music as an electro-acoustic duo, combining their genre-spanning backgrounds in a creative space for their shared musical inclinations. They released their first EP, Antenna Echoes, in July 2020 – music melding together Hilary’s piano improvisations and field recordings with Jo’s synths, electronic treatments and effects. In August 2021, their live-streamed hour-long online set for La Casa Encendida’s En Pausa festival was released as Session One, the premier release on the LA-based 9128.live, sister label to A Strangely Isolated Place. The duo’s set for Daylight Music will be their first live performance together in front of a physical audience.
