329: Shida Shahabi, Mandel + Sam Brookes
8 February @ 12:00 pm - 2:00 pm
Stockholm-based Shida Shahabi has drawn widespread acclaim with her stunning debut album Homes (2018) and EP Shifts (2019) on 130701 records. Meshing a strong melodic sensibility with an intimate and deeply atmospheric exploration of space and time, Shida astounds for ‘summoning music from the very bowels of the piano’ (Mojo) and ‘delivering a masterclass in simplicity… allowing each note the space and time to become truly affecting.’ (Future Music)
Mandel is a creative partnership between award-winning composer Emily Hall (Bedroom Community) and violinist, viola player, and singer Misha Law. Drawn together by a common aesthetic and a love of musical practice as mindful free improvisation, their process is to improvise – record – refine – perform.
Inspired at sixteen by the folk revivalists of the 60s to begin writing and performing while training as a gilder in his late father’s workshop, Sam Brookes has since come a long way. His sophomore album, Kairos, was named by The Independent as one of the stand-out records of the year. Reminiscent of Tim Buckley, Brookes ‘excels at propulsive, narratively rich folk, delivered in a soaring, clear-as-a-bell singing voice’ (The Sunday Times). Sought out as a vocalist and collaborator for his warm, assured voice, Brookes has worked with a long list of artists, including Scott Matthews, Lucy Rose, Newton Faulkner, and Basement Jaxx.
