As with the rest of the live music scene in London, we were forced to pause the series abruptly in March of 2020. Unfortunately, the Union Chapel is no longer able to host the series and so we have looked to re-imagine the series across different venues, which leads me on nicely to: What are our plans? We are going to return in September with a bi-monthly season taking us up to Christmas with approximately eight events across three venues, these will be - St John at Bethnal Green (Central), St John’s at Leytonstone (East), Grand Junction (West). We are using this as an opportunity to grow our series across London, introducing our mix of music and arts to different areas and communities.
As we move to different venues, the costs have dramatically increased with the addition of hiring the venue, bringing in a sound system (microphones, stands, mixer, etc.), with a van to transport it in and an experienced engineer, who will set it up and pack it down. Costs also include designing and producing the adverts for the events, social media, website and the financial support for the time to plan and deliver the series.
Another new big investment of time and money has been setting up and running our own pop-up café at each venue. It has always been an important part of the event’s DNA so we’re making sure it is in place from when the doors creak open again. Most importantly, we also want to make sure we can financially support our musicians for their time and transport, which cannot always come from the Pay-What-You-Can door entry.
I would like to give a special thank you to our community of supporters and musicians who helped raise just over £10,000 to help re-start the series. As we stated in our crowdfunder, this amount was hoped to be matched by an Arts grant which has unfortunately not succeeded on our initial submission. We will of course continue to adjust and resubmit over the coming years. In the meantime this has meant we are left reliant on the money we receive through the door and advanced tickets. So….
Tweaks, changes and challenges
There are some changes and minor adjustments as we slowly emerge together from lockdown. Firstly, we are working with smaller capacity, yet spacious venues and secondly, and we are moving to a cashless event.
Bearing that in mind we strongly recommend reserving your place or pew in advance. Not only will this allow for quick guaranteed entry on the day, but it will help support the return of Daylight this Autumn and help continue the series long into the future.
Pay-What-You-Can entry continues on the door, though we now ask you consider the amount of £10 (for the above reasons). Though as always we want to welcome as many people as we can to the series so, please come along and give what is comfortable for you.
We will continue to take on board feedback this Autumn and do our best to change and adapt. At the end of the day, we’re just happy we are able (even if just briefly) to return, say hi and create new musical moments together with our community.
